Introduction

Two-yearly updates are recommended by the Rotherham Ear Care Centre (under whose license this course is delivered). They recommend this to ensure that  Nurses and HCAs performing irrigation remain accountable for their actions and are suggested for Nurses who have completed Study Day 1 and HCAs who have completed the Ear Care Award. The Update session allows  Nurses and HCAs the chance to revise their knowledge and competencies relevant to irrigation, & also covers revision of the decontamination of equipment, and the ability to undertake ear care within the boundaries of their professional competence, responsibility & accountability.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• This study session is intended to give the practitioner more confidence when dealing with ear problems

• The knowledge gained from this day enables safer practice which can reduce patient discomfort, speed up resolution and make referrals more appropriate

• It enables Nurses and HCAs to take a more active role in the prevention of ear problems, thus saving general practitioner consulting time and prescribing costs

WORKSHOP AGENDA

• Anatomy and physiology of the ear (patient education in easy terms)

• Otoscopy, instrumentation and irrigation

• Recognition of the abnormal ear, common problems
